Lowther Castle & Gardens

Heritage site
    • Lowther Castle & Gardens is a romantic ruined castle presiding over 130 acres of lost historic gardens rediscovered and now in the process of being given new life. Closed to the public for over 70 years the castle & grounds became the subject of one of Europe's largest reclamation and restoration projects in 2011. The current gardens lie over the top of late 17th century remains, often to the same footprint, and have survived in varying degrees as wild woodland or the Victorian and Edwardian designs. There are beautiful original features mixed with wild areas that house our protected endangered wildlife, all defined on the west side by a limestone escarpment with stunning views over the fells.
