- Newlyn Art Gallery exists because of a long history of contemporary art making in the far west of Cornwall and has celebrated contemporary art and supported the artists that produce it more than 120 years. In 2007 the gallery reopened after a period of renovation with the addition of a new pavilion. At this time the gallery also launched its new space, The Exchange, in the centre of Penzance, which has enabled the organisation to take on larger, more ambitious projects across its two sites. Formerly the town’s telephone exchange, the huge space retains the original industrial feel of the building and features a large t-shaped gallery and a striking glass facade that runs the entire length of the building. It is well suited to installation and social participation projects and its international reputation allows it to bring some of the best art being produced around the globe to Cornwall. Together the galleries continue to present contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a programme of events, activities and education. Each venue has a well-stocked book and gift shop plus a café serving snacks and light lunches. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but may not be allowed in the exhibition spaces during certain times.
