Cow Farts, Smoking And Anglo-Saxon Bears

February 08 2006

We’ve had tons of emails from Show Me surfers, who have a lot to say about some of our news stories and games. So who’s up first?

In Cow Farts: Global Warmers Or A Load Of Hot Air?, we wondered what could be done to solve the problem of methane from cow farts collecting in the sky and trapping warm air around our planet – one of the causes of global warming.

One of our readers suggests:

"to stop cows releasing methane into the atmosphere we should link up bottles into their backsides and eventually they will evolve and all cows will have this bottle in them."

Ouch! We're not sure the cows would be too pleased about this idea.

Jamie was very interested in our story Super Sticky Football Boots Could Win Award:

"Hi i'd like to purchase a pair of the 'pig skin' football boots, but don't know were to buy them from or how much they will be. Can you help please...? "

Sorry Jamie, but we don't know if the Pig skins are available yet.

They're such a good idea they are bound to hit the sports shops soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

When we asked Should Brunel Stop Smoking His Cigar?, we knew that some of our readers would have strong feelings about it:

"You say it wasn't known before the 1950s that smoking was bad for your health. Nonsense. Doctors have been saying this for centuries. Stop lying to children."

This is something which causes lots of debate. Way back in 1604, King James I called smoking a "custome lothesome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs...", and imposed a heavy tax on tobacco.

But it wasn't until the 1950s that it became widely known that smoking is bad for you, and the government started to set up clinics to help people who wanted to stop smoking. Health warnings on cigarette and cigar packets didn't appear in Britain until 1971.

And now for a scary story from a mystery writer:

"ONSE APOUNER TIME THEAR WAS A BEAR CALLED BEARWOLF AND HE CAME IN THE ANGLO SAXONS TENT AND HE GRABED THE NEERIST SLEEPER AND TOOK HIM TO HER CAVE AND CHOPED HIS HED OF AND THEN SOME ONE CAME AND PUT A SAWDOO HER HART AND THE SAWD MELTED BECAUSE BEARWOLFS BLOOD WAS 2 SPISEY AND HE WAS KING THE END"

Yikes! We really wouldn't want to bump into Bearwolf...

Maybe this terrifying tale was inspired by Show Me's Stories of King Arthur writing challenge, or our story about Beowulf's Dragon.

This great poem was sent in by Matthew Windler:

"English is fun to say
Especially in a happy way
English is neat and hard to beat!"

Thanks Matthew - would we be right in guessing that English is one of your favourite subjects at school?

Anabel says: "i am finding about world war 2 at school"

If, like Anabel, you're learning World War Two, you can find lots of games and makes to do with life during wartime on Show Me's 20th Century Britain topic page.

Ellie writes in to say:

Thanks Ellie! Our Tudor Rose story asks you to think about the emblems or symbols people have used in the past to represent themselves or their families.

What would your emblem look like, and why? We'd love to see them, so send them in!
