Read Our Murderous Mice Mailbag!

August 02 2005

Well, it seems that our news story about seabird chicks being attacked by giant mice on Gough Island in the South Atlantic really grabbed your attention.

Blurry black and white photo of a mouse nibbling at the eye of a seabird chick.

We've had loads of mail from Show Me readers suggesting how the mice could be stopped from harming the birds.

Andrew Griffin says:
"natural predators would be best and the most sustainable. Anything feline would either not survive the climate or find the chicks easier to attack than the mice. Are there any snakes or lizards which would go after the mice in preference to the eggs or chicks?"

Page has another intriguing suggestion:
"I think i no jus the sulotion
1.send over a thick mettal cage.
2.put some tasty meat inside.
3.wait silent in a bush till you see a/some rat/rats.
4.blind it by taking its photo.
5.pick it up and place it in the cage."

We've also had a few interesting ideas from anonymous Show Me surfers. One thinks someone should "invent giant mousetraps".

Another suggests that the people who look after Gough Island should "introduce kestrels or owls", who would kill the mice, and so keep the chicks safe.

So, what do YOU think? Send us your ideas and suggestions via our Get In Touch page - we look forward to hearing from you!
