Dragon Starts Fire Of London!

May 23 2005

We've had a fantastic picture and story sent in to us by a Show Me surfer - five-year old Joshua.

Child's drawing of a dragon breathing fire at a tall building and a hose leading from a fire engine spraying water at the dragon.

He's got an interesting new theory about the Great Fire of London, which happened in 1666.

Over to you, Joshua:

'this is a picture of a dragon, with a fire breathing mouth...

Child's drawing of a dragon breathing fire at a tall building and a hose spraying water at the dragon.

Child's drawing of a tall building on fire, next to a fire engine.

'... where he is in the city of London setting fire to the high buildings, firemen are trying to put the fire fire out, and helping a man escape from the tall building...'

'...this man lives in the small house. This is how the great fire of london really started.'

Child's drawing of a small pink house with a yellow roof.

Hmmm... very interesting Joshua. What do you think? Could it have been a dragon?

Someone who was there to see the Great Fire in 1666 was a man called Samuel Pepys. He's famous for writing a diary which survived to this day.

Why not read some extracts from his diary and see what his theory was?

If you can find out what Pepys believed started the Great Fire, or what historians think happened use the Get In Touch page to let us know.

Clue: the Museum of London's Great Fire pages are a great place to start.

We'll send out some Crayola goodies to any right answers. Remember to include your name and address if you'd like a prize, but please check with a grown-up before sending them in.

Joshua, thank you so much for your story and your picture, we love them.
