As time marches on the available pool of aged relatives with memories of the war inevitably diminishes. Their experiences and memories are precious, so why not appoint an inquisitive child as family archivist?
Explain to the child that the relative in question probably has lots of really interesting things to tell them about their time in the war. Spend some time thinking up pertinent questions to ask, in consultation with your child, arm them with a video or audio recorder and off they go.
This kind of exercise can often surprise a child who might not necessarily realise that old people do have interesting things to say. It also gives a personal context to the facts they learn at school.
