Create Your Own Kew Gardens Poster

June 17 2008

Our arty friends at ArtisanCam have come up with a fantastic online lino printing tool.

Shows poster for Kew Gardens with stylised images of nature and key.

This lino-print poster was designed for the London Underground in 1936 by an artist called Edward Bawden.

It encouraged people to visit Kew Gardens - a huge park in London famous for its trees, plants and greenhouses.

The poster also encouraged visitors to travel by tube - London's underground trains.

© Kew Gardens (open daily), Edward Bawden 1936. Commissioned by London Transport.

Never heard of lino printing or Bawden? No worries. You can find out about both on the site.

The tool takes you through the printing process as if you were an artist at work on the real thing.

As always, your Show Me editor has tirelessly tested the printing tool for you - here's my poster starting to take shape.

I loved making prints but it did take my ancient brain a few goes to get it right. I'm sure you'll all be very quick at picking it up. Do as the weird hand says and you'll be fine.

One of my favourite bits was seeing my poster on a virtual London street - looks good eh?

There's a gallery of user pics which makes you feel as if you're on an escalator, looking at posters on the wall. Watch out for that too.

So - have a play around with the tool, and see if you can come up with an advertising masterpiece!

Take a look at Kew Garden's Climbers and Creepers website too - lots of nature games and info about the park's wildlife.

Find out about visiting Kew Gardens on their website and if you enjoy the printing tool check out ArtisanCam's other activities, games and makes.
