Show Me Launches Brand New Gunpowder Plot Website!October 12 2005

We've just launched a brand new website all about Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night! The site is called Gunpowder, Treason and Plot and we worked with the Parliamentary Archives to build it (more about them later).

On November 5 2005 it will be 400 years since a man called Robert Catesby got a group of men together, including Guy Fawkes, to try and kill King James. Luckily the Plot was discovered in time and nobody was hurt. People were so thankful that they lit bonfires, set off fireworks and held street parties to celebrate.

Those celebrations became a tradition, which is why we still have Bonfire Night every year.
Our new website tells the exciting story of the plotters and what happened. Have you ever wondered how we know what happened hundreds of years ago?

Well, amazing as it seems, lots of books, paintings, drawings, diaries, letters and more have been kept safe all that time.
Many of these precious things are kept at the House of Lords in London in their Parliamentary Archives. The archives are a bit like a library.

The people who look after the collection, the archivists, wanted lots of you to see what was there... a website is the perfect way to show you.
On the site you can read the story, have a go at some interactives, and see lots of amazing pictures.
One warning though - the story is very gory. There's lots of blood, guts and nasty secrets, so you have to have a strong stomach to look.

Are you feeling arty? To celebrate the launch of the website, and mark the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, the History of Parliament Trust is launching a competition for 7-14 year olds and their schools. Find out how to enter, and what you could win on this page.
