Pigtastic! Pigs in museums

June 25 2010

These gorgeous little piglets and their mum are from Ryedale Folk Museum in Yorkshire.

And they're really rare too because they're a breed called Lincolnshire Curly Coated Pigs.

There are more photos on the Ryedale Folk Museum blog.

We couldn't resist showing you Doris and her piglets too!

They're East Anglian Large Black Pigs at the Museum of East Anglian Life.

The Large Black Pig comes from the Old English Hog that was found in Britain in the 16th and 17th Centuries.

Or how about this Tamworth pig at the National Museum of Rural Life in Scotland?

Check out the photos of the piglets on the National Museums Scotland website.

Why do museums have animals?
Farming museums like to help rare breeds survive - that's types that might die out such as the Curly Coated pigs.

They also have working animals so you can see how farming used to be.

There are lots more working farm museums around the UK that you can visit with your family.
We've got a round-up for you on our main site Culture24.

Here's one of the working Shire horses you can see at Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, West Sussex. He's called Major.

If you go along to a working farm museum with your family or your school, why not get in touch and send us some photos? We'd love to hear from you.
