Ash from Iceland volcano stops UK planes flying

April 15 2010

News broke last night that ash from a volcano in Iceland is now in the air over Scotland and parts of England and is stopping many planes from flying...

Here's a volcano we made. Scroll down for how to make your own. All photos © Rachel Hayward/Culture24

The ash would cause damage to the engines of the planes and makes flying too dangerous.

The ash cloud will stay high up in the sky and won't come down low enough to affect us though.

Make your own volcano

Fancy making an erupting volcano yourself? The Manchester Museum shows you how with a downloadable Volcano Making activity but get an adult to help you.

There's even a fact sheet on how volcanoes work.

You can also watch staff from The Manchester Museum showing you how to make volcanic eruptions on YouTube:

Don't forget to send us some photos of your erupting volcano!

And you could Caboodle your volcano too.

When you've finished, why not play the Natural History Museum's Build a volcano game?

Find out more about volcanoes on Show Me.
