Sikh Museum Gets Good News

December 23 2002

Left: a special visitor for the Guru Nanak Museum.

The Guru Nanak Sikh Museum in Leicester is very happy after being given a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A grant is an amount of money. They will use the money to employ an education officer. Until the museum was given the grant it was run by volunteers, who don't get paid.

A museum education officer is like a teacher, but based in a museum. They are there to make sure the museum is a good place for children to visit. They help children and grown-ups to understand all of the objects in the museum.

Left: ready to party at the Guru Nanak Museum.

The Guru Nanak Museum is a very special one as it was the first museum all about the Sikh religion to be registered in Europe.

Last November the museum had another reason to party - it was ten years old!

The museum contains paintings of historic Sikhs, weapons, coins, Panjab handcraft and photographs. You can also find out about the Sikh soldiers who fought in the two World Wars.

Left: a glimpse of the museum's treasure.

There are many Sikhs living in Britain today. The Guru Nanak Sikh Museum is there for Sikhs to find out about the history of their people and also for non-Sikhs to learn about another religion.

So, good news for the museum as they head into 2003. Why not drop in and check it out?
