Fab New Game - Nanw's Great Adventure

June 27 2007

If you thought libraries were boring places where you had to be quiet and couldn't play then think again. The National Library of Wales (Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru in Welsh), has launched a brand new and very noisy online game that is SO great we just had to tell you about it.

It's called Nanw's Great Adventure and we can't stop playing it!

In the game you control the hero Nanw as he makes his way through a maze of passageways and gardens at a huge library.

You have to find rare books and bring them back to the librarian before time runs out.

Think that sounds easy? Think again - because you have to remember your way around, solve tricky puzzles and find keys to unlock hidden parts of the maze to get to the books.

All of that with the clock ticking...

The characters you meet on your travels give you clues to help you along and the faster you return the hidden book to the librarian the more points you get.

There are seven stages to complete - we've made it up to level six but haven't been able to crack the last part yet. We keep running out of time.

So good luck! If you do really well you may even get your name on the high score board - our best score is 13,610, it doesn't even come close!

What's more, the game is bilingual, which means its written in two languages - Welsh and English.

Plus it teaches you all about the rare books in the real-life library in Aberystwyth, like The Black Book of Carmarthen.

One of the earliest surviving manuscripts (hand written books) in the Welsh language, The Black Book was written in around 1250, almost 800 years ago.

It's full of legends and stories including ones about King Arthur and his knights and Merlin the wizard.

The picture shows one of the pages from the book - do you think that creature is looking fierce or friendly?

Why not have a play of Nanw's Great Adventure and see what other treasures from The National Library of Wales you can find…? Next time we play we want to see lots of Show Me surfers on that leaderboard!
