Make Your Footprint A Famous Record Breaker!

April 25 2006

A group of museums in the West Midlands is trying to break the Guinness World Record for the longest line of footprints ever and they need your help.

It doesn't matter how old you are, where you live or even how stinky your feet are, your footprint could help set a world record!

Screenshot from Footsteps of Giants website, showing their logo - lots of coloured footprints forming a foot shape.

All you have to do is draw round one of your feet on a piece of A4 sized paper, decorate it and post it in to the Footsteps team.

They will then stick all the footprints together in a long, long line.

The team's hoping to get about 16,000 footprints to be sure of setting the world record.

The current official record of footprints in a line is 10,932 and is held by National Geographic Kids in America.

So, come on Show Me surfers, get your cheesy feet out... you can beat that really easily!

Here's what to do.

First, hold your nose with one hand to ward off any stray sweaty pongs. With the other hand take off your shoes and socks - only bare footprints are allowed.

Draw round one foot (right or left but not both) in pencil, felt-tip or chalk.

Then colour your footprint in or decorate it in any way you like.

Maybe you could use outdoor materials, like leaves, shells or petals...?

A girl decorated the outlines of a pair of feet on a sheet of yellow paper, using feathers and buttons.

Or why not hunt round indoors for inspiration - tin foil's shiny and sparkly, or how about sweet wrappers for a colourful, crunchy effect?

Another way to make your footprint is with paint, mud or even chocolate. What a way to use up all those Easter eggs you haven't eaten yet!

You can download and print out a template with detailed rules on it if you'd like.

The footprints record attempt is part of the Footsteps of Giants Festival. From Saturday 27th May to Sunday 4th June 2006, the museums of the West Midlands are celebrating what's great about their area. There'll be loads of fun events to get involved with too.

If you are visiting any of the museums involved you can take along your footprint and give it to the staff.

If you don't live in the area you should post your entry to the address below by 14 July 2006:

West Midlands Hub Office - Footsteps of Giants Festival
Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery
Chamberlain Square
Birmingham B3 3DH.

The record attempt is on July 22 2006 at Thinktank in Birmingham, when the footprints will be stuck together to make a very, very long line.

We'll let you know what happens!
