Digging For Stories

Young boy using a pickaxe to mine coal. He is in a cramped position and covered in coal dust.

You're freezing cold, exhausted and finding it difficult to breathe. You can't stand up straight, you never know when the roof is going to cave in and there's icy water swirling around your ankles.

You only have a flickering flame to see by and you're expected to dig coal out of a hard rock face for hours on end.

Take a look at this picture from the National Mining Museum and try to imagine yourself underground.

How would you have managed? Write us a short story about life as a miner, e-mail it to us and we'll publish the best ones on the site.
