Easter activities: eggs and chicks made easy

March 30 2010

We've got some fun Easter make and do activities for you - Easter chicks and salt dough Easter eggs (we enjoyed ourselves testing them out)...

Photo showing painted little yellow Easter chicks with orange beaks and black felt tip drawn legs eyes and wings against a green painted background.

Cheepy chicks
How about making these cute little chicks?

We got the idea from the Usborne Easter Activities book by Fiona Watt and Ray Gibson.

You will need:
poster paints (yellow and green)
a carrot or you can use your thumb!
paint brushes and black felt tip pen
some bubble wrap
white card or paper
a small piece of orange paper cut into little triangles for the chicks' beaks
and a pair of scissors.

Showing the hands of a child painting a salt dough egg with purple paint.

Instructions
1. Cut the carrot in half (ask an adult to help you with this).
2. Put some yellow poster paint on a small dish or saucer and then use a carrot half to make some yellow circle shaped prints on some white card or paper and leave to dry.

3. Paint the green poster paint onto the bubbly side of some bubble wrap and then print this on a second piece of white card or paper. Leave to dry.
4. Stick the yellow chicks onto the green background and add the orange triangle shapes for the beaks. Use the black felt tip pen to draw in the eyes, wings, tails and legs.

Salt dough Easter eggs
Do you like this Easter egg display? The eggs are made from salt dough, so don't eat them! The National Portrait Gallery has a salt dough recipe for you. Again, get an adult to help you.

Don't forget to make a hole in the top of each egg before you bake them so that you can put a thread through to hang up the egg after you've painted it.

There are also lots of crafty activities in our Art and Design section.

Get in touch with your artwork - we'd love to see your Easter creations.

And while you're at it, why not make a Caboodle collection of your Easter activities?
