Hi-Legs

September 09 2005

Max Palmer is 11, and his invention, Hi-Legs, won second prize in Show Me's Science Writing Competition, judged by Horrible Science author Nick Arnold.

It's over to Max to explain what Hi-Legs is made of and how it works:

Annotated pencil drawing on a boy standing on a platform which rises up to help the user see over tall objects in front of them. In handwriting next to the drawing it says, 'Now you can be sure to see everything. What are you waiting for? Buy 'Hi-legs' today. Available on the internet only at www.hi-legs.co.uk'.

"Are you short? Do you find if there is an event like a parade, pop concert, demonstration or your favourite celebrity is appearing, that someone very tall always stands right in front of you and blocks your view? Well, I have just what you need: Hi-Legs!

Diagram of the top of the machine, with foot holes and a lead socket.

It's portable (30x40cm) and can be carried in your ruck sack. Powered by 4 rechargeable batteries, it is made of metal and plastic.

Your shoes fit safely into the adjustable holders on top of the item and fasten just like ski boots into skis.

Once attached to Hi-Legs stand as normal then press the green button on the control pad, which is attached by a strong lead which you have pressed into the unit.

To the amazement of everyone around you will now rise slowly from the ground to the height of your choice (upper limit 2 metres).

An 'extra' on the control pad means you can press East or West arrows and turn the platform to face the left or the right - if you so desire!

Available in red, green, blue, black and luminous you can add your own decorations using the free stickers and waterproof pens provided.

For children and adults up to 150kg only."

Well done Max - we think it's a great idea!
