If you were a 16th century noble or wealthy merchant in Northern Europe, you wouldn't need to go all the way to church for your devotion; you could afford to have the whole story of Christ immaculately carved onto a pocket-sized object to carry around with you. A British Museum curator introduces one of her favourite objects from the breathtaking Waddesdon Bequest.
