JUNGLE GARDEN WORD PICTURE

Imagine a lush, green rainforest. This is the Jungle Garden. Our picture shows huge ferns growing next to dangling vines. The hum of insects and rustling of birds reminds you that living creatures are never far away in the jungle.

In the jungle treetops up high block out the hot sun, so the forest floor is damp and cool. It’s full of colour and life.

An alligator stretches lazily next to a stream in our Jungle Garden. Did you know that alligators can run at 50km per hour when they rise up onto their toes? That’s fast!

An enormous frog flicks its tongue at a passing insect close by. In the Australian rainforests they have Giant Tree Frogs, which make a meowing sound, like a cat, when they get scared. They may be big, but they’re real scaredy-cats when they’re in danger.

Another animal that likes to live in the jungle is the monkey. In our picture a monkey is hiding behind some leaves. Monkeys in the jungle live mainly in trees. They swing or jump from tree to tree to get around.

We need the huge jungles of the world for many reasons. One very important job the trees do is to create oxygen from carbon dioxide. Without jungles we would all have less oxygen to breathe.

We also take many precious things from the jungle. Rubber, cocoa and coffee all come from rainforest trees. Many medicines come from the jungle too. There are so many plants and animals in the jungle that we have only discovered a tiny number of them. There could be all sorts of useful things waiting to be found.

At the moment much of the world’s rainforest is being destroyed to make room for farmland and houses, especially in South America. When the trees are burnt down all of the insects and plants are destroyed too.

It takes all sorts of gardens to make a world and they all need looking after.
