COUNTRY GARDEN WORD PICTURE

Imagine cows and sheep grazing in green fields as chickens scratch for seeds in dusty earth. This is the Country Garden. Our picture shows trees, fields, a green hill and blue sky.

Every now and then the farmer rides past on a noisy red tractor. It’s hard work looking after all those fields and animals.

Chickens scratch at the ground in our Country Garden, looking for something to eat. Chickens have no teeth. They use tiny stones in their stomachs to grind up food.

Snuffling around in the bushes at the front of the picture is a small and prickly hedgehog. Hedgehogs sleep a lot during the day and usually come out at night. They can wander up to 3 km in one night while they search for food.

Close by is a wild rabbit. Its ears are twitching as it listens out for danger while it munches on the grass. Rabbits need to digest their food twice. To do this they eat their own poo! This helps them to get as much goodness and energy out of the food as they can.

Luckily, humans don’t need to eat poo. Our stomachs can digest food first time around.

The sheep in the far fields are peacefully eating their grass as well. Did you know that sheep can’t stand up without help if they end up lying on their backs? If they aren’t helped to get up again, they die.

The cows in the Country Garden are grazing grass in a field. They have to keep eating, as they need energy to help them produce milk. The average dairy cow produces 90 glasses of milk a day.

Without the countryside we would all be very hungry indeed. Most of our food comes from the country. Fruit, vegetables, cereal, meat and milk all come from farms.

Wool comes from sheep just like the ones in this picture. We use it to make clothes and keep us warm.

It takes all sorts of gardens to make a world and they all need looking after.
