Word gets out...Ten days to go. The gunpowder was ready. The plotters were ready. What could possibly go wrong? Well, all it took to upset those careful plans was a very mysterious letter.

This letter has survived 400 years. Can you find out what it says?

Letter sent to Lord Monteagle, National Archives (UK)

What could it mean?Lord Monteagle, a very important man and friend of King James, was given this letter at dinner on October 26th 1605. A tall, mysterious stranger had handed it to his servant in the street earlier in the evening.

Monteagle didn't know what to make of the letter and he had no way of knowing who had written it. Was it a nasty joke? A hoax? Or was it a serious warning...?

Find out more:In the hundreds of years since the Gunpowder Plot many different authors and artists have written versions of the story. Take a look at the pages below to see two very different ways of portraying, or showing, Lord Monteagle.
