Luck or a miracle? So, Catesby, Fawkes and the other plotters had very nearly managed to kill the King and blow up the Houses of Parliament. Luckily, their daring plan had been discovered in the nick of time.

King James was so relieved he went to Parliament on November 9th and made a speech giving thanks for the failure of the Plot. There he is on the card - looking very pleased with himself!

Many people believed the lucky escape was a miracle - that God was watching the plotters and had made sure they would be found out.

Shows an engraving of Guy Fawkes in hat and cape holding a lantern approaching the open cellar of a building. Barrels can be seen inside the cellar and in the sky is a beam of light pointing towards Fawkes with Video Rideo I see and smile written into it.

History of Gunpowder Treason, G. Smeeton. V&A Images/Victoria and Albert Museum.
This print shows Guy Fawkes going to light the gunpowder fuse. Can you see the light beaming down on him? The picture is meant to show that God was keeping an eye on Fawkes and would save the Protestants from the Gunpowder Plot.
