Royalty and Religion: Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and James I

Home > Plotting > Royalty and Religion: Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and James I

Take a look at these three to find out more. Don't miss Henry VIII behaving very badly...

Fighting and arguments between different religions in England dated back many years. It was closely tied to the royal family, in particular the Tudors.

Henry VIII, a Protestant, treated Catholics very badly, as did Elizabeth I who ruled before James. Many people had hoped that when she died in 1603 and James I became King, there might be a chance for peace.

By 1604 though it was clear this wasn't going to happen. Catesby must have felt the Gunpowder Plot was his only option.
